International Conference on the Teaching of Mathematics

Samos, Greece, July 3-6, 1998

Faculty from around the globe will gather in Greece this summer to examine new ways of teaching undergraduate mathematics. The International Conference on the Teaching of Mathematics will be held July 3-6, 1998, in the village of Pythagorion, Samos, Greece. Because this conference provides a unique international forum, the Seventh Annual Conference on the Teaching of Mathematics will not be held in the United States this year. Its sponsors are collaborating with the International Conference sponsors to bring you this unusual opportunity to learn more about the ways in which educators worldwide are introducing innovative teaching methods into their classrooms.

Hosted and sponsored by the University of the Aegean, the International Conference on the Teaching of Mathematics is also sponsored by Capital University, the University of Arizona, Ohio State University, Harvard University Summer School, Stanford University, the University of Strathclyde, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, Zürich, and John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Program Chair Ignatios Vakalis, Capital University, is working with co-chairs Nicolas Hadjisavvas, University of Aegean, and Deborah Hughes Hallett, Harvard University, to invite speakers to present on the following topics:

  • Educational Research: the results of current research in mathematics education and assessment of student learning
  • Technology: the effective integration of computing technology (calculators, computer algebra systems, the World Wide Web, and Internet resources) into the undergraduate math curriculum
  • Innovative Teaching Formats: New ways of teaching undergraduate mathematics courses, including cooperative and collaborative teaching and learning styles
  • Distance Learning: news of distance learning technologies for teaching and learning mathematics that will address current hardware/software delivery media, educational materials, and assessment of student learning
  • Specific Courses: reports of reform efforts in specific mathematics courses and assessment of their results
  • Other Disciplines: the effects of changes in the teaching of mathematics on other disciplines, including interdisciplinary courses and an exploration of the mathematical needs of client disciplines
Contributed paper sessions from 38 countries, poster sessions, and workshops will complete the program of invited speakers. Hand-held calculator and PC-based workshops will be offered free of charge to registrants on a first-come first-served basis.
