JEAN LEMAIRE

 

Jean Lemaire is Professor of Actuarial Science and Insurance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is the Chairperson of the School's Insurance and Risk Management Department. He holds a BS in mathematics, a MS in actuarial science, and a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, all obtained at the Free University of Brussels.

Jean Lemaire has published over 100 research papers and books in game theory and actuarial science. He has lectured on insurance regulation and actuarial science in over 50 countries. His 1985 book "Automobile Insurance: Actuarial Models" was the insurance book-of-the-year both in Europe (Ernst Meyer Prize, Geneva Association) and in the US (Clarence Arthur Kulp Award, American Risk and Insurance Association.) He won the Clarence Arthur Kulp Award again in 1997 with his book "Bonus-Malus Systems in Automobile Insurance." His books have been translated in French, Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, Japanese, and Korean.

Jean Lemaire received the 1988 International Prize of the Italian Academy of Science. He also won the first prize of the 1980 Boleslaw Monic international competition for an essay on net retentions in reinsurance, the first prize of the 1979 competition of the Belgian National Fund of Scientific Research for his work in automobile insurance, and the Journal of Risk and Insurance Award for the best feature paper published in 2000.

Jean Lemaire is a former Chairman and Treasurer of ASTIN, the nonlife section of the International Actuarial Association. He was for fifteen years the Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin of the International Actuarial Association. He was elected Honorary Fellow of the British Institute of Actuaries and Honorary Member of the French, Swiss and Italian Associations of Actuarie s.
