Jossey-Bass was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by Allen Jossey-Bass, who began his publishing career with Prentice-Hall in New York in 1956. By the early seventies, he had established a reputation for publishing quality books for professionals in the behavioral sciences and higher education. Under Mr. Jossey-Bass' leadership, the company thrived and expanded into the fields of K-12, higher and adult education; business and manage-ment; health and psychology; nonprofit and public management; and conflict resolution. In 1973, the publishing agenda expanded to include topical quarterly series, starting with New Directions for Higher Education. In 1974, the company reached its first $1 million net sales year. Four years later, the company's annual sales doubled to $2 million.

In 1982, the first Jossey-Bass management series book was published, followed by the first health series book in 1986, the first public administration series book in 1987, and the first education series and nonprofit series books in 1988. In 1989, with more than 700 professional titles in print, Allan Jossey-Bass sold the company to Maxwell Communi-cations Corporation. Soon afterward, Jossey-Bass became a wholly owned subsidiary of Macmillan Publishing Company. In 1990, the publishing agenda expanded again to include manuals and workbooks. In March 1991, Mr. Lynn D.W. Luckow became president and Chief Executive Officer of Jossey-Bass, having started at the company in 1984 as an editor in the higher education series. The first instrument was published in 1992.

Like many other publishers, Jossey-Bass has experienced a number of ownership changes. What follows is a timeline highlighting the company's transitions, milestones and achievements: In February 1994, Jossey-Bass was acquired by Paramount and became a unit of Simon & Schuster, the world's largest English language book publisher.

In November 1995, Simon & Schuster announced the repositioning of Lexington Books as the publishing industry's premier scholarly press. Renamed The New Lexington Press, the imprint was transferred to Jossey-Bass on January 1, 1996. In April 1996, Jossey-Bass acquired Pfeiffer & Company, a leading publisher of human resource development training materials for consultants, trainers, and managers. Pfeiffer's unique publishing program offers Jossey-Bass customers even more practical ways to facilitate individual and organizational learning and change. On July 3, 1996, Allen Jossey-Bass died at the age of 68 in Petaluma, California, of complications from emphysema. Later that year, Jossey-Bass moved into online selling by launching a site (www.josseybass.com and www.pfeiffer.com) on the World Wide Web.

In November 1998, Simon & Schuster sold Jossey-Bass and other units in its professional group to Pearson PLC. In January 1999, Pearson announced that it would be selling various businesses from the Simon & Schuster acquisition that were not a strategic fit, including Jossey-Bass. On May 24 1999, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. announced their agreement to purchase Jossey-Bass from Pearson for approximately $82 million. The acquisition closed in June, 1999. In February 2000, Debra S. Hunter, previously executive vice-president, is named President of the company.

Jossey-Bass publications are sold to customers worldwide in multiple channels: retail stores, web-based marketing, direct mail, and special bulk sales directly to organizations and resellers. In Spring 2000, Jossey-Bass claims approximately 3,100 books, training packages, instruments, videos and audios in print; 140 employees; and sales of nearly $40 million including international and rights sales.
